Japanese sensei provides encouragement for fledgling Wexford Aikido Club
When Chris Wallace moved to Wexford from the UK four years ago, he found little outlet for his passion – Aikido.
A traditional martial art that focuses on harmonising with the opponents energy, rather than relying on brute force, it promotes self-defence skills while emphasising the principles of non-aggression and non-competition, improving endurance, co-ordination and general health, fitness and wellbeing.
With no real Aikido scene in the south east to speak of, Chris decided to set about rectifying that himself. A ‘5th dan hombu’ or a fifth-degree black belt in Aikido himself, he decided to form his own club in 2023 and 18 months later, Wexford Aikido club is beginning to build momentum.

With a growing membership the club now has two dojo locations, training Mondays at Westpoint Business Park in Clonard and Thursdays at Gaelscoil Charman.
The strides being made by the club were recognised with a visit from Technical Director Atsushi Mimuro Shihan from Yokohama International Aikido in Japan, who received a very warm Wexford welcome. A 7th dan hombu, the visiting sensei was able to offer members of Aikido Wexford the benefit of his vast experience and chat about his journey at a special class at the Gaelscoil.

The sensei made a special stop in Wexford before he begins a tour of UK associated clubs and Chris and everyone associated with Aikido Wexford were incredibly grateful.
The Wexford club is always welcoming new members and those interested can find out more at aikidowexford.org.
